Hispanic Access Releases “Nuestro Mar, Nuestro Futuro” Toolkit to Empower Latino Communities in Sustainable Seafood Choices

Category: News Releases

Hispanic Access Foundation has released Nuestro Mar, Nuestro Futuro: A Sustainable Seafood Guide, a new toolkit created to empower Latino communities with the knowledge needed to make informed seafood consumption choices that help conserve marine natural resources.

The toolkit addresses the growing threats to ocean health, including overfishing, plastic pollution, habitat destruction, ocean acidification, and climate change--issues that not only threaten marine biodiversity but also endanger food security and the livelihoods of Latino communities across the country.

“Latino communities have a deep connection to the ocean through history, culture, and food,” said Sofia Barboza, Hispanic Access Climate Program Manager. “This toolkit empowers individuals and families to take meaningful action to preserve marine life while still enjoying seafood—just in a healthier, more informed way.”

Created as a practical, user-friendly resource, Nuestro Mar, Nuestro Futuro provides guidance on sustainable seafood and fisheries management, reading seafood labels, including harvest methods, identifying responsible sourcing certifications, and recognizing fishing techniques impact on marine ecosystems. The toolkit explains key sustainability strategies such as catch quotas, seasonal closures, marine protected areas, and ecosystem-based management in simple, accessible language.

"Seafood is woven into our traditions, celebrations, and everyday meals,” said Melissa Marquez, co-author of the seafood guide. “This resource provides clear, culturally relevant guidance to help our communities ensure that the seafood on our plates comes from sustainable sources."

The toolkit was specifically developed to serve Latino audiences and highlights culturally relevant ways to engage with ocean conservation. It encourages both individual and collective action to ensure a healthier ocean for future generations. The toolkit is available for download at https://bit.ly/seafoodguide25.
