Pastor Tirso Rubin: Defining What it Means to be “Unidos en Comunidad”

Category: Spotlight Story

During the pandemic, Arizona was a hot spot for COVID-19 cases. After the vaccine was distributed, the immunization programs helped low income communities get vaccinated, but some still rejected it, especially the Latino community.

In Tucson, Arizona, Pastor Tirso Rubin partnered with Hispanic Access Foundation to establish a vaccination site at his church, Iglesia de Dios Comunidad de Amor. Hispanic Access launched ‘Unity in Community’ to vaccinate Latinos and further educate them about the importance of the COVID-19 vaccine. Though there’s a lack of trust between Latinos and science, the vaccination sites are looking to close that gap and protect the lives of vulnerable populations. Pima County has fully vaccinated at least 70% of the population, and some of these numbers can be attributed to Pastor Rubin’s collaboration.

“We live in a society that needs resources, support, and a change in direction, and the only way we can achieve this is through God,” said pastor Rubin. “Like Jesus helped the poor and those that needed it the most, it is our mission to bless and uplift, so people can improve themselves and develop the skills and gifts that God gave them.”

As a pastor, the health and well-being of his community is essential to strengthening society’s relationship with Christ. Pastor Rubín was born in Tuxtla Gutiérrez, Chiapas and has been living in Tucson, Arizona for 23 years. A few years after Hispanic Access was founded, Maite Arce met with local faith leaders to discuss ways to support the Latino community, especially those that turn to their faith for guidance. One of the things that inspired Pastor Rubin was how centered Hispanic Access Foundation was in educating the community, so when the organization invited him to be part of the vaccination initiative, Pastor Rubin happily agreed.

“Our responsibility is to help our community, and Hispanic Access is doing just that,” said Pastor Rubin. “They’re helping us understand the people we serve, and how to find solutions to problems that affect us all.”

The COVID-19 vaccination clinics in Tucson are a success, and Pastor Rubin’s dedication to his community have not only changed Pima County’s statistics, but the way Latinos think about their health and that of their families.

“I want people to care for their health, and ‘Unity in Community’ transformed us into a vessel of hope and support.”
