For many Latinos, barriers such as language, fraud and misinformation lead the list of complications they face when it comes to filing their tax return. An accurate tax history is a critical building block to long-term financial success – home ownership, citizenship, healthcare and even college tuition. In 2010, HAF partnered with H&R Block to launch a pilot program designed to empower the Latino community through tax education. At its peak, the program operated in 19 markets nationwide as Latinos throughout the U.S. received the help they needed in order to begin building the foundation for a better life.
HAF prides itself on its vast network of trusted local leaders, like Latino faith leaders, with power to convene and influence their constituents. As the tax education program expanded to new markets, we activated our local field teams to open the doors for our partner to connect with the community.
We provided more than 1,200 FREE bilingual workshops/tax talks and events at churches, schools, consulates, community centers and fairs to bring direct education and assistance to tens of thousands of Latino families. At each workshop, a HAF field team leader was joined by a tax expert to deliver a set curriculum and then answer questions in an open session.
In addition to developing partnerships with more than 900 community-based organizations nationally, HAF was adept at leveraging the media to engage a broader audience. HAF placed more than 27,000 radio and TV PSAs and earned more than 6,000 media pickups, including interviews on CNN en Español, WABC-TV in New York, and numerous Spanish-language radio stations.
