Let's rewind a bit. My story starts back in Blacksburg, VA, during my master's program, where I was deeply entrenched in community engagement initiatives through the Humble Hustle Company’s Humble Hike’s Program. Fast forward to my internship here at Patuxent, and I find myself seamlessly transitioning my passion for connecting with local communities, but this time in Laurel, MD, much closer to my hometown of Baltimore.

One of the most fulfilling aspects of my role has been my involvement with Bowie State University. From organizing photography class field trips to orchestrating an archery activity with our mobile, inflatable archery unit, and even supporting the university's "Wellness Day" on multiple occasions, every interaction has been a testament to the power of community engagement.

Looking back, I’m most proud of the Black History Month hike I led in February. With over 30 enthusiastic participants, we explored the natural wonders of the refuge with a community of largely African American first-time visitors. It was a powerful reminder of the profound impact we can have when we bridge the gap between history, culture, and the great outdoors.

Through these experiences, I've gleaned invaluable insights into the essence of effective community engagement. It's not just about organizing events; it's about forging genuine connections, especially with historically excluded communities. It's about listening, learning, and meeting people where they are. Building and nurturing these relationships have come with its fair share of challenges and triumphs. But with each hurdle overcome and every success celebrated, I've grown in ways I never thought possible.

Looking ahead, I'm filled with anticipation for the next chapter of my journey. My time here has reaffirmed my passion for science communication and partnership building. As I set my sights on a future full-time position with the U.S. Fish & Wildlife Service, I'm eager to continue cultivating connections, igniting curiosity, and fostering a deeper appreciation for the great outdoors.
