This interactive program inspired the next generation of environmental stewards by engaging them in hands-on activities, including:
- Touring the behind-the-scenes Aquaculture facility and meeting rehabilitated sea turtles.
- Feeding stingrays and observing the California sea lion demonstration.
- Learning from animal trainers and rescue team members about their unique career journeys.
- Participating in a case study simulation to “become” marine veterinarians, diagnosing and treating stranded marine animals.
“This program provides an incredible opportunity for local Latino youth to connect with the world of marine conservation where their voices and talents are often underrepresented,” said Maite Arce, President and CEO of Hispanic Access Foundation. “According to the Pew Research Center, Latino workers make up 17% of total employment across all occupations, but just 8% of all STEM workers. At Hispanic Access Foundation, we believe fostering this connection to nature and career pathways is essential for empowering the next generation to create lasting, positive change in their communities and beyond.”
The program features a free talk series by Latino role model scientists and professionals in health science/STEM. It offers follow-up, near-peer mentoring to interested high school students and their parents throughout the academic year to build awareness of careers in health research among Latino families in under-resourced communities, foster interest among youth to pursue health research careers and encourage a college path in these fields among high school students in these communities.
"Our partnership with the Hispanic Access Foundation underscores our commitment to empowering communities and creating pathways to opportunity," said MaryEllen Mateleska, Senior Director of Education and Conservation at Mystic Aquarium. "By supporting programming that fosters exposure to marine science careers and local conservation action, we are not only investing in the future of our environment but also in the future of the talented, diverse individuals who will lead the charge. Together, we aim to inspire and equip the next generation of environmental leaders, ensuring that all communities have the resources and support they need to thrive."
